Tracking shots and parallax
Move alongside a street or skyline and let depth do the work.
A tracking shot moves alongside a line — a street, a coastline, a row of buildings. Parallax is what makes it feel three-dimensional.
Tracking
- Pick a linear feature: Market Street, the Embarcadero, or a row of towers.
- Fly parallel to it at a steady height.
- Keep the feature in the same part of the frame; use yaw only for small corrections.
- Exit cleanly rather than stopping in the middle of the line.
Parallax
Parallax is the difference in apparent movement between near and far objects. A nearby rooftop slides across the frame quickly while the distant bay barely moves. The effect is strongest when the camera moves laterally and there is a clear foreground.
Designing the layers
- Foreground: a roof edge, a bridge cable, a hill.
- Middle ground: the subject or the street.
- Background: the bay, the horizon or a distant ridge.
If two layers are enough, the shot still works. Three layers usually feel richer but are harder to keep aligned.
Why this works
Lateral movement plus depth cues tells the brain “this is a space, not a picture”. It is also a useful storytelling tool: the foreground can hide and reveal the background as the camera passes.
Common mistakes
- Flying straight at the subject. Forward motion produces less parallax than lateral motion.
- No foreground. Without a near layer, the shot looks flat.
- Changing height. A constant height keeps the layers stable.
Try it yourself
Fly a lateral pass with a rooftop in the near foreground and the pyramid behind it. Success is a visible speed difference between the two layers.

About the screenshots
Every screenshot and demo in this documentation was captured in FPV Map over the Transamerica Pyramid and the Financial District, San Francisco.
FPV Map is a simulator. It never sends commands to an aircraft, and virtual rehearsal is not a substitute for legal checks, a site survey or safe piloting.
