Practice drills

Five repeatable exercises that build smooth, deliberate control.

New pilots 8 min read Beginner

Five short drills that turn stick input into deliberate camera movement. Run them over the Financial District; the skyline gives you clear references.

You'll need

Normal mode, a hover, and about ten minutes.

What you'll learn

  • Isolate each axis cleanly.
  • Fly a repeatable box and orbit.
  • Improve smoothness by repeating the same move.

1. Axis isolation

Pick one axis per pass: climb, descend, yaw left, yaw right, forward, backward, strafe left, strafe right. Return to a hover between each. Do not combine axes.

Success: every movement starts and ends from a stable hover, with no unintended axis.

2. The box

Fly a square around the pyramid using pitch and roll only. Keep the pyramid on the same side of the frame. Then repeat the square using yaw to face each new direction.

Success: a closed shape with a constant altitude and a subject that stays in frame.

3. Approach, pause, pull away

Start wide. Approach for two seconds, pause for two seconds, then pull away for two seconds. Keep the subject centred.

Success: the pause is genuinely still, and the pull-away does not overshoot the starting distance.

4. Slow orbit

Circle the pyramid at a constant distance, using a small amount of yaw and a small amount of pitch. Aim for one full circle in about twenty seconds.

Success: the subject stays roughly the same size and never leaves the centre third.

5. Repeat and smooth

Pick your best move from the previous drills and repeat it five times. On each pass, reduce the amount of correction you need.

Success: the fifth pass is visibly smoother than the first, with fewer stick reversals.

Count the corrections

Smoothness is mostly the absence of corrections. Count how many times you reverse a stick during a move; fewer reversals usually means a better shot.

Why this works

Repetition builds anticipation. You stop reacting to the drone's position and start releasing input before the endpoint, which is the core skill behind every cinematic move.

Common mistakes

  • Practising a new move every pass. Repeat the same move; improvement comes from comparison.
  • Ignoring altitude. Check H after each drill; unintended climbs are common.
  • Flying too fast. Slow inputs expose errors earlier and are easier to correct.
