B-roll for vloggers

Shots that support narration instead of repeating it.

Vloggers 6 min read Intermediate

B-roll supports narration instead of repeating it. If the voiceover says “the city never stops”, show movement and rhythm — not another wide shot of the same skyline.

Match the shot to a sentence

Narration beatUseful B-roll
“The city wakes up.”A slow rise over rooftops with the bay catching the light.
“Everything moves fast.”A low tracking pass along a street canyon.
“But some things endure.”A static-ish frame of the pyramid with a slow orbit.
“From up here it looks calm.”A high, slow pull-away that shrinks the streets.

Shoot for the edit

  • Give each clip a clear beginning, middle and end.
  • Hold the start and end frames for a beat so the editor has handles.
  • Vary shot sizes: wide, medium, detail.
  • Keep the movement direction consistent across a sequence unless the cut is meant to disorient.
A closer approach over the Financial District, useful as B-roll
A medium approach shot. It can support a narration beat about scale or arrival.

Why this works

B-roll is edited against a story, so its job is to add information the voiceover cannot: texture, scale, rhythm and place. A clear start and end makes the clip usable even if the middle is not perfect.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the narration visually. If the line already says “skyline”, show a street or a detail.
  • Clips with no handles. Start moving immediately and stop immediately; there is nothing to trim.
  • All shots the same size. A sequence of wide shots feels flat.

Try it yourself

Write three narration lines for a thirty-second piece about downtown San Francisco. Capture one B-roll clip per line, each with a different shot size. Success is a set that could be cut together without repeating the same frame.
